An Impulsive High School Student Manifests More Than A Few Alcohol-Related Problems, Gets Expelled From School, And Has To See The School Counselor

Stephen was a seventeen year old high school senior who was displaying several alcohol-related issues at school. Consequently, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist, before he would be permitted to return to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to go over his school suspension with his parents. His Mother and Father were "fairly traditional" and explained to Stephen that dropping out of school was not a doable educational plan of action. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would more likely than not be like a lead weight around his legs that could probably inhibit his educational aspirations for the rest of his adult life. Furthermore, Stephen's Mom and Dad were very saddened that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second.

It was obvious that his Mother and Father were completely in accord with Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his conversation with his Mom and Dad, Stephen at last agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen called the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his second period class.

When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she without pause looked at all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he comprehended why his recent alcohol-related behavior was such a cause for concern.

Quite frankly, Stephen was unsure why the principal informed him that he had to see a school psychologist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking behavior? Because virtually all of his friends drink as much if not more than he does, in effect, drinking shouldn't be such a big thing. Stated more directly, if nearly everybody is drinking, why is this such a major concern?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to thwart his ability to function as a responsible young man. As conveyed by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your classmates drink wine coolers, wine, hard liquor, or beer does not mean that it is the appropriate behavior for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was extremely well prepared for her scheduled time with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had underlined that summarized diverse drinking statistics and facts that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of information that applied chiefly to teens.

After Miss Pender went over the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was evident that what Miss Pender made known to Stephen was a real jolt to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to articulate the short term and the long term outcomes of alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to authenticate what she was saying with alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse statistics and facts that related to everyone in general, and particularly to adolescents.

Indeed, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantly comprehended why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his pals any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the material she reviewed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
