A Health And Physical Education Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Significance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most popular parochial high school in the local community. Even though she had been teaching for only a few years, she had already gained a reputation as a person with instructional approaches that encouraged and motivated the pupils in her class to think and to learn.

For instance, one Tuesday morning at 10:30 she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a general point of view and we are also going to learn about a number of the most common signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed viewpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably substantiate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that an individual exhibits, the greater the probability that he or she is a person who is alcohol dependent."

Miss Jackson then told the members of the class that each individual would be responsible for researching three alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the other members in the class via a seven minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to go over the list and rank the top six alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After about fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told the pupils in her class that after she goes over the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told the pupils in her class to go over the numbers and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within 40 or 50 seconds, almost every student in the class raised his or her hand. It was obvious that the pupils had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, virtually every pupil had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, that is, "Do you feel very sick when you abstain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told her students why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcohol addiction. She stressed the fact that the essential difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

Essentially this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol abruptly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol dependent person, the pupils started to understand the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson realized that she had stimulated and motivated her students to stop and think about an important social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
